Banele’s family (including some extended members of the family) are preparing to sing Happy Birthday and to cut the cake and to cut Banele’s hair for the first time. There is general activity and signing and dad invites another young child to join Banele in cutting the cake. Once cut, Sihle takes a bit of white icing and puts a dab on Banele’s forehead and cheeks.

Banele is placed on dad’s lap and the hair cutting begins with a small, child’s pair of scissors, which proves to be blunt. He is passed over to mom and when the actual cutting begins, Banele sits looking around at the other people. He shows no concern or distress at the cutting (his first haircut).
